Half-centuries by Faf du Plessis and Temba Bavuma was followed by a lively spell by Morne Morkel which left Bangladesh in early trouble in pursuit of a stiff target of 424. Riding on Du Plessis's 81 and Bavuma's 71, South Africa posted 247 for 6 in their second innings before declaring in the second session on Sunday (October 1).

In reply, Bangladesh were rattled early by Morkel's strikes and were three down for 49 at Tea on Day 4. However, in what came as a setback for the hosts, the pacer left the field just before the break as he suffered a side strain which might keep him out of action for the remainder of the Test.
